چکیده
Recent literature on 17-century investigations of nature has focused on the dichotomy between singular contrived experiment conducted at specific places and times versus generalized experience, observing nature in its normal course: the former has often been characterized as primarily active and interventionist, the latter as a more passive recording of nature undisturbed. Probably Charles Schmitt and Peter Dear have written the most influential pages on this topic. Schmitt drew a distinction between Jacopo Zabarella’s (15321589) neo-Aristotelian emphasis on the investigation of the normal course of nature versus Galileo’s (1564-1642) contrived experiments, probing nature in unusual or peculiar settings. Dear has discussed a number of strategies to tackle the problem of induction, or to bridge the gap between individual cases and general statements; these strategies were both rhetorical and in the experimental practice, with the emphasis on appropriate narrative styles, witnesses, and repetition, for example. My primary aim in this paper is to take this dichotomy as a starting point to examine problematic evidence in anatomy and related areas, including natural history and medicine. In this paper I

متن کاملReliability and Generalization Studies Reliability: Arguments for Multiple Perspectives and Potential Problems with Generalization across Studies
The present article addresses reliability issues in light of recent studies and debates focused on psychometrics versus datametrics terminology and reliability generalization (RG) introduced by Vacha-Haase. The purpose here was not to moderate arguments presented in these debates but to discuss multiple perspectives on score reliability and how they may affect research practice, editorial polic...

متن کاملPrediction of mean residual of record values based on previous records
In the study of reliability of the technical systems, records model play an important role. Assume that the lower limit value of the first record is known, then we propose a definiton of the mean residual life of the future record. We predict mean residual of the future records under condition that the lower limit value of the mth record is known. Furthermore, we present generalization of the...
متن کاملNaomi Feldman Learning and Overgeneralization Patterns in a Connectionist Model of the German Plural
The debate over the processing mechanism for inflectional morphology has focused largely on the German plural system because it seems to contain a minority default, a form that has low frequency but high productivity in diverse contexts. Child overgeneralization patterns, phonological similarity effects, restrictions on compounding, reaction times, and neural dissociations have all been used to...
